The Family
With the titans gone, Zeus and his brothers and sisters became the rulers. Zeus became ruler of the gods, god of the humans, law, morality, thunder and lightning. His brother, Poseidon, became god of the seas. While his other brother Hades, became god of the underworld. Zeus then came to marry his sister Hera, the goddess of family and married women. Experts say that Zeus and Hera had two children: Ares and Hephaestos. Ares, the god of war, was very violent and arrogent. He had an affair with Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, who was also married to Hephaestos. Hephaestos was the god of fires, the forge and craftsmen. He was born with a lame leg and thrown from olympus by his mother, Hera.
Zeus had many affairs, which made Hera very angry, experts say. One was with Leto, that who gave birth to Apollo and Artemis, twins. Apollo became the god of the sun, light, music and prophecy and Artemis became the goddess of the moon and the hunt. Another was with Maia, daughter of the titan Atlas. She gave birth to Hermes, the god of travelers, thieves, literature and athletics.
Another goddess of Olympus was Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom. Some experts say that she was born from the head of Zeus, ready for battle. The last of the two goddesses of Olympus were Hestia, goddess of the hearth (home), and Demeter, the goddess of plants and agriculture.
