The Creation of the Gods and Goddesses
Many experts say that before there was anything, there was nothing but a dark void called Chaos. From this dark void came Erebus and Night. These two forces gave birth to Mother Earth (Gaea) and Father Heaven (Uranus). Gaea and Uranus gave birth to many things including the Titans. They included: Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Thea, Rhea and Cronus. Rhea and Cronus formed a union and created the gods.
Rhea gave birth to five children: Demeter, Hades, Hestia, Hera, and Poseidon. Experts say that Cronus devoured his children, in an effort to stop them from overthrow him, like he did his father. Rhea then finds she is pregnant again with her sixth child, Zeus. She then fled to the city of Crete and secretly gave birth to Zeus.
When Zeus got older, he found out the fates of his brothers and sisters and declared war on his father Cronus and the other Titans. Zeus then went to his father Cronus and gave him a potion. This potion made Cronus vomit up all his children. With Zeus's brothers and sisters rescued, they went to war on the titans.
During the war Zeus and his brothers and sisters rescued the Cyclopses and Hundred-Handed ones, who were sent to Tartaurus when Cronus overthrew his father. The Cyclopses, in order to thank the gods, gave Zeus lightning and the thunderbolt, Poseidon the trident, and Hades the helmet of darkness. Zeus and his brothers and sisters eventually won the war. As a result, Cronus and most of his brothers were bound to chains and sent to Tartaurus, the deepest part of the underworld.
